Das Bundeskabinett hat einen Gesetzentwurf zur Erhöhung des Schutzes durch den gesetzlichen Mindestlohn und zu Änderungen im Bereich der geringfügigen Beschäftigung beschlossen. Der Gesetzentwurf sieht vor, dass der Mindestlohn zum 1. Oktober 2022 auf zwölf Euro angehoben wird. Zudem wird die Entgeltgrenze für Minijobs auf 520 Euro erhöht. Mit dem Gesetzentwurf wird laut dem Bundesarbeitsministerium (BMAS) die im Koalitionsvertrag vereinbarte einmalige gesetzliche Erhöhung des Mindestlohns auf brutto zwölf Euro je Zeitstunde umgesetzt. Diese Mindestlohnhöhe entspricht ungefähr 60 Prozent des Medianlohns in Deutschland – eine Richtgröße, die im europäischen Diskurs für einen angemessenen Mindestschutz empfohlen wird. Zukünftige Anpassungen des Mindestlohns erfolgen weiterhin auf Grundlage von Beschlüssen der Mindestlohnkommission, erstmals wieder bis zum 30. Juni 2023 mit Wirkung zum 1. Januar 2024.
