DGUV survey: Violence among schoolchildren on the rise

A recent survey by the German Social Accident Insurance (DGUV) shows alarming trends: more than half of teachers at general education schools have observed an increase in psychological violence and bullying among pupils following the pandemic. 44% of those surveyed also reported an increase in physical violence. DGUV statistics recorded around 64,897 violence-related school accidents in 2023, an increase of 11,000 compared to the previous year.

Preventive measures necessary

DGUV Director General Dr. Stefan Hussy emphasizes the need for sustainable measures to prevent violence. Schools are already implementing a wide range of prevention programs, but there is still room for improvement. Psychological violence in particular, such as insults and bullying, is frequently observed and requires targeted prevention strategies.

Background and measures

Pupils are covered by statutory accident insurance when attending school and on the way to and from school, which also includes violence-related accidents. The accident rate in 2023 was 7.5 violence-related accidents per 1,000 insured persons, significantly higher than in the pandemic years. Serious injuries are rare, but the rising figures show a need for action, according to the DGUV.
