Almost 1,500 people died of occupational cancer in Germany in 2023. Small and micro-enterprises in particular face major challenges when dealing with carcinogenic hazardous substances. The German Social Accident Insurance provides valuable support in the form of the GDA best practice database.

A recent survey by the German Social Accident Insurance (DGUV) shows alarming trends: more than half of teachers at general education schools have observed an increase in psychological violence and bullying among pupils following the pandemic. 44% of those surveyed also reported an increase in physical violence. DGUV statistics recorded around 64,897 violence-related school accidents in 2023, an increase of 11,000 compared to the previous year.

In 2023, 2,839 people lost their lives in road accidents in Germany, according to the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis). This was 1.8 percent or 51 more fatalities than in the previous year. The number of people injured in road traffic accidents also rose compared to 2022, by 1.5% to 366,557. According to Destatis, this was due to a 3.4% increase in the number of minor injuries to 313,655, while the number of serious injuries fell by 8.4% to 52,902 people. This means that an average of 8 people were killed, 145 seriously injured and 859 slightly injured on German roads per day in 2023.

In 2023, people in the Rhine and Ruhr region were absent from work due to illness more frequently than ever before. AOK Rheinland/Hamburg has calculated a record sickness rate of 7.18% for this region and thus also for major cities such as Cologne, Essen and Düsseldorf. Insured employees were on sick leave for an average of 26.21 days.

The number of reports of suspected occupational illnesses fell by more than 60 percent in 2023. The number of recognized occupational diseases also fell accordingly to 72,747 (minus 63.5 percent). This is according to preliminary figures published by the German Social Accident Insurance Institutions for the past year by their association, the German Social Accident Insurance (DGUV).

The umbrella organization BVPG (Federal Association for Prevention and Health Promotion) has been committed to health in Germany for 70 years. In 2024, it will celebrate its anniversary together with its member organizations, including Basi, its board and its network. Various activities are planned. The highlight of the 2024 anniversary year is the BVPG status conference.

The latest, second report from the National Prevention Conference (NPK) to the Federal Ministry of Health shows how social insurance providers and private health insurers have increased their commitment to health and prevention between 2019 and 2022 on the basis of the Prevention Act.
