Handling biological substances: New edition of guidelines published

The Biological Substances Ordinance (BioStoffV) protects all employees working with biological agents (biological substances) across all industries. The ordinance was revised on July 23, 2013 in order to transpose EU Directive 2010/32/EU (“Needlestick Directive”) into national law. The fifth revised edition is now available.

The BioStoffV applies to many different sectors, including healthcare, biotechnology, research, waste management, wastewater treatment, agriculture and forestry. The aim is to protect employees from the dangers of infectious, sensitizing or toxic biological substances. The protection of other people who could be at risk from handling biological substances is also taken into account.

The current publication of the LASI (Länderausschuss für Arbeitsschutz und Sicherheitstechnik) is available on the website.
