International Labor Conference: Right to a healthy working environment adopted

During the 110th International Labour Conference of the ILO (International Labour Organization), the delegates decided to elevate the principle of a safe and healthy working environment to the status of a fundamental principle and right at work. This makes healthy work an integral part of the so-called ILO core labor standards, also known as the ILO core conventions. These standards were adopted in 1998 as part of the ILO Declaration on Fundamental Principles and Rights at Work. According to this declaration, the 187 ILO member states undertake to respect and promote the principles and rights adopted, regardless of their level of economic development and, in particular, regardless of whether or not they have ratified the relevant conventions. The conference decision adds a fifth category to the four existing categories of fundamental principles and rights at work. More information can be found on the ILO website.
