Basi members up to date: MTM ASSOCIATION e. V. – Describing, evaluating and designing work
The members are the heart of Basi – and we are pleased to introduce them to you in a loose sequence. This time, the MTM ASSOCIATION e. V. answers three key questions.
What is the task of your institution?
The MTM ASSOCIATION e. V., founded in 1962 as Deutsche MTM-Vereinigung e. V., is one of the leading industrial engineering associations with more than 240 member companies. It offers consulting services and software solutions via the Deutsche MTM-Gesellschaft Industrie- und Wirtschaftsberatung mbH, as well as certified training courses at the MTM Academy. The MTM Institute carries out research and development work. The statutory mission of the non-profit association is to disseminate the process language MTM (Methods-Time Measurement), a global method standard for the description, evaluation and design of human work.
With the help of the MTM process language, companies in the manufacturing industry can calculate processes, products and personnel requirements, increase productivity in the company and at the same time contribute to keeping employees healthy.
The MTM process was developed in the USA in the mid-1940s. From there, it was spread throughout the world via national MTM associations. The MTM ASSOCIATION e. V. in Germany has set itself the task of establishing MTM as a global standard and developing it further.
More information can be found on the website.
How does the MTM ASSOCIATION e. V. contribute to health and safety at work?
The MTM ASSOCIATION e. V. places the main focus on human work. The focus is on the description and evaluation of manual activities and the planning and design of a workplace that is as safe as possible in terms of health. The procedures and tools developed by the MTM ASSOCIATION e. V. and its partners are intended to support users in the manufacturing industry in the evaluation of existing work systems, also in the planning of new workplaces and processes and thus also in the assessment of working conditions in accordance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act (ArbSchG). As a result, communication between the various specialist departments can be improved. Work planning and occupational health and safety can thus move closer together.
The tools used include EAWS® (Ergonomic Assessment Worksheet), the internationally recognized standard for assessing physical stress in manual activities in the area of mass and series production. The ISO-certified procedure (ISO/TR 23076:2021) assesses static postures, action forces, manual load handling, repetitive strain on the upper extremities and extra points. Numerous companies in Germany and around the world are already using EAWS® to benefit their employees in terms of safety and health. Certain MTM methods are characterized in particular by movement models derived from humans. This has a particularly beneficial effect on safe and healthy working conditions for employees. The MTM ASSOCIATION e. V. provides support with the introduction and initial application of its tools and assessment systems as well as with training and further education – in Germany and worldwide via the One-MTM partner network.
Why are you happy to be a member of Basi?
Prevention, preventive action, is also an important topic for users of the MTM method standard. And not only from the point of view of occupational health and safety and keeping employees healthy in the long term, but also for economic reasons. According to the MTM ASSOCIATION e. V., designing efficient and sustainable work systems from the outset pays off for both sides: for companies and employees. “As a member of Basi, we have the opportunity to draw the attention of occupational health and safety experts to this aspect of their work in the company,” says Dr. Thomas Finsterbusch, Head of the MTM Academy.
