He’s the new man: Professor Dr. Rolf Ellegast heads the Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (IFA) of the German Social Accident Insurance in Sankt Augustin. In this KAN interview, he provides insights into the current focus, developments and the impact of the institute’s research work.

Since it was founded 30 years ago, the Commission for Occupational Health and Safety and Standardization (KAN) has dealt with a wide range of topics. In the beginning, it was mainly concerned with product safety standards; today, KAN deals with standardization policy developments, among other things: from artificial intelligence to climate change and the circular economy to the revision of the EU Standardization Regulation. The KANBrief now reports in detail on the symposium that KAN hosted in Berlin to mark its 30th anniversary.

The Product Safety Regulation (EU) 2023/988 will come into force in December 2024. It is based on the new legal framework that standardizes market surveillance, accreditation, conformity assessment and CE marking for products. What do respirators, collaborative robots and business trips have in common? Standards are being developed for them that play an important role in occupational safety and health. This and many other topics were discussed by the board and members of the Federal Working Group for Safety and Health at Work (Basi) e. V. at its members’ meeting, which took place in Hamburg this time.

A current explanatory film by KAN, the Commission for Occupational Health and Safety and Standardization, deals with the information on personal weight in standards and regulations. The body weight of people plays a major role in the safety of products or work equipment. The value of 75 kilograms for persons used as a basis in many standards is no longer up to date.
